During chemotherapy treatment, it is important to pay attention to your diet, as certain foods can interfere with treatment, affect a weakened immune system, or increase the risk of infections. As for fruits, although they are generally healthy, some can be problematic for people on chemotherapy due to the possible presence of bacteria or their digestive effects. Here are some fruits to avoid or use caution with:
Unwashed or poorly disinfected fruits: Since the immune system is compromised, it is crucial to avoid fruits that have not been properly washed. This includes fruits with skin that are eaten, such as apples or grapes.
Excessively acidic fruits: Fruits such as oranges, lemons, grapefruit, or pineapple can irritate the mouth or digestive system, especially if the patient has mouth sores (mucositis) or digestive problems caused by chemotherapy.
Raw fruits in immunocompromised environments: In some cases, it is recommended to avoid raw fruits such as strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries, which are more difficult to properly disinfect due to their texture. They may also contain harmful microorganisms.
Dried fruits: Dried fruits, such as raisins or apricots, may be contaminated with mold or fungus, which is dangerous for people with weakened immune systems.
Unpasteurized fruit juices: These juices may contain bacteria that are dangerous for immunosuppressed people, so only pasteurized juices should be consumed.
It is always advisable to follow the dietary guidelines of the medical team and nutritionist, as needs and restrictions may vary depending on the type of chemotherapy and the patient’s condition.
