Prostate Cancer: When Is the Right Time for Radiotherapy?

In Costa Rica, many men diagnosed with prostate cancer wonder when Radiation Oncology becomes part of their care. The timing depends on the disease stage, biopsy findings, and PSA behavior. In general, radiotherapy can serve two major roles: as the primary curative treatment or as an additional therapy after surgery.

For men with localized disease and good functional status, radiotherapy can be offered as the main treatment. This approach aims to cure without removing the prostate, preserving anatomy and avoiding certain surgical risks. The decision considers age, comorbidities, and patient preferences, always grounded in current scientific evidence.

After prostatectomy, some conditions justify radiotherapy: positive margins, extracapsular extension, biochemical recurrence, or imaging suggesting residual disease. In these scenarios, radiotherapy works as an added layer of protection, reducing the likelihood of cancer returning.

Ultimately, the goal is individualized care. In Radiation Oncology, each case is evaluated with precision, transparency, and empathy. The purpose is to offer men in Costa Rica not only effective cancer control, but also a treatment plan that aligns with their overall well-being and life goals.
